Woven garments made in India, matched to the right hub

Shirts, trousers, denim, dresses, ethnic wear and tailoring each need a different kind of factory. Here is how Sourcingo matches them, and what your spec should say.

What counts as woven

Woven fabric is made by interlacing two sets of yarn at right angles: the warp running lengthwise and the weft running across. It does not stretch much unless elastane is added, which is why woven garments rely on cut, darts, pleats and fasteners for fit. Most shirts, trousers, denim, dresses and tailoring are woven.

Sourcingo makes woven garments for men, women and kids through 80+ verified partner factories:

  • Shirts and blouses, casual, formal, resort and overshirts
  • Trousers and chinos, tailored, relaxed and cargo
  • Denim, jeans, jackets, skirts and shirts
  • Dresses, day dresses, maxis, shirt dresses and kids' party dresses
  • Kurtas, kurtis and ethnic wear, including sarees and lehengas
  • Blazers, suits and jackets
  • Workwear
  • School uniforms, shirts, trousers, skirts and pinafores

Which hub fits which product

Woven production is spread across several of Sourcingo's seven hubs. Each has its own strengths:

Hub Known for
Bangalore Woven shirts, trousers and denim, large export lines
Mumbai Fashion-forward womenswear, denim, quick turnarounds
Delhi NCR Export womenswear, western wear, kidswear, embellishment
Jaipur Hand block printing, ethnic and fusion wear, cotton womenswear
Kolkata Menswear and value-priced volume

In practice: a structured men's shirt programme usually fits Bangalore. A trend-led womenswear drop with fast repeats suits Mumbai or Delhi NCR. Embroidered or embellished dresses point to Delhi NCR. Block printed kurtas and cotton co-ords belong in Jaipur. Value-priced menswear basics in volume fit Kolkata. We match each style to the unit that does that product well, not to one factory for everything.

Fabric terms that come up

You will hear these in costing and sampling. Knowing them helps you ask for what you want:

  • Weave. Plain weave (poplin, cambric, voile, mulmul) is crisp or light. Twill (chino, gabardine, denim) has diagonal lines and drapes and wears well. Oxford is a basket weave used for shirts. Satin weaves have a smooth, shiny face.
  • Count and construction. Shirting is often described like "40s x 40s, 132 x 72": yarn counts in warp and weft, then threads per inch each way. Higher counts and denser construction usually mean a finer, smoother fabric.
  • Denim weight. Measured in ounces per square yard. Lighter denims suit shirts and summer styles. Heavier denims suit rigid jeans and jackets.
  • Fibre. Cotton, linen, viscose or rayon, polyester, and blends. Each affects drape, crease, shrinkage and cost.
  • Yarn-dyed vs piece-dyed. Checks and stripes are woven from dyed yarns. Solids are usually dyed as fabric. Yarn-dyed fabric is often woven to order, which affects minimums.

What to specify for woven styles

Woven garments leave less room for error than knits. A few millimetres at the shoulder or seat changes the fit. Your brief or tech pack should cover:

  • Fabric: fibre content, weave, count and construction if you know them, GSM or ounce weight, and width.
  • Colour: pantone reference or a physical swatch. For yarn-dyed fabrics, the check or stripe repeat.
  • Finish: mercerised, peach finish, enzyme or silicone wash, wrinkle-resistant, sanforised for shrinkage control.
  • Wash (for denim and garment-dyed styles): rinse, stone wash, enzyme wash, bleach, tint, whiskers and abrasions. Send a physical wash standard if you have one.
  • Construction details: seam types, topstitching, interlining, pocket bags, plackets and closures.
  • Trims: buttons, zips, rivets, labels and hang tags.
  • Measurements: a size chart with tolerances, and whether sizing is Indian, international or both.

If you do not have tech packs, our in-house designer can turn sketches, mood boards and reference photos into flat sketches and tech packs. Sourcingo sources fabric and trims and samples until the fit is right.

Minimums, sampling and timelines

Minimums start from 25 pieces per style. Wovens can need more when the fabric is yarn-dyed, dyed to a custom shade, printed to order or washed in a way that needs a minimum batch. Denim washes in particular are run in machine loads. The exact minimum is confirmed once we see your specs.

Every style is sampled. You sign off on fit, fabric and finish before bulk. For denim and garment-washed styles, approve the wash on the sample, because it changes both colour and measurements. Production takes 45 days from sample approval to dispatch. Sampling comes first and depends on the style and how quickly approvals come back.

Uniforms, tailoring and ethnic wear

These three need extra care in the brief.

School uniforms need consistent colour across reorders, durable fabric and a wide size range for children. Keep a master swatch and send size breakdowns early.

Blazers and suits involve interlinings, canvassing or fusing, shoulder padding and many more pattern pieces than a shirt. Expect more fit rounds in sampling.

Ethnic wear such as kurtas, sarees and lehengas often includes embroidery, block print or embellishment. These steps add time, and placement needs approval on the sample.

Quality and tracking

Our own team monitors production on the factory floor and checks finished goods against the approved sample before packing: measurements, stitching, shade, wash and finishing. Certifications such as ISO, Sedex, GOTS and OEKO-TEX are held by partner factories, with factory-wise copies shared on request before an order. After your first order is confirmed, your team gets a client portal login with stage-by-stage status, approvals and delivery dates.

Questions

Can you make jeans and denim jackets?

Yes. Denim is made through partner units in Bangalore and Mumbai. Send your fabric weight, fit and wash references, and approve the wash on the sample before bulk.

What is the minimum for a woven shirt?

From 25 pieces per style when using available fabric. Yarn-dyed checks, custom colours and printed fabrics usually need more. We confirm after seeing the specs.

Do you make school uniforms?

Yes. School uniforms are part of the woven catalogue. Consistent colour across reorders and a full children's size range are the main things to plan for.

Which is better for my brand, linen or cotton?

Linen breathes well and has a natural texture, but creases easily and can cost more. Cotton is more versatile and easier to care for. Blends sit in between. Ask for swatches of both.

Can one order include shirts, trousers and dresses?

Yes. Different styles in one order can go to different specialist partner units, each matched to what it makes best.
